Subtly-placed whispered melodies
Hanna-Mari Ojala, also known as H-M O, is a multi-talented Finnish musician whose soundscape is accurately described in the liner notes as “spanning experimental music, dance, video poetry—and painting worlds with sounds and translating energies into tunes.” The opening piece, “When I Want It to Scream,” effectively conveys this impression right away with its quiet, melancholic voices and evocative ambient transmission that entices us into H-M O’s auditory realm. Tracks like “Call for My Soul to Come Back” and “For the Birds (of Prayer)” sound nearly imperceptible as the five-piece suite progresses—its subtly-placed whispered melodies somehow enter our subconscious.
The tone of The Lamenting Window intensifies as it gets closer to our soul; and the vocals become more audible, in a way. “Fireflies” is the penultimate track—drifting through intricately woven layers that eventually fall apart to reveal their message in the distance, while “Birds & Bees” coalesces to create a transcendental audio collage with static field recordings drawing us in. Suggested as a noted parallel with artists like Vittoria Fleet, Björk, and the Cocteau Twins.
