God Body Disconnect :: Spiral of Grief (Cryo Chamber)

This is the projects 7th effort, and it seems simple yet conceptual and more complex than it may appear. Don’t forget, especially in this genre, the devil (or angels) are in the details.

A cinematic human story

I strap on my ear goggles and begin the the record. Right off the top I can tell that I am not listening to the same old long sweeping tones, but rather a mans voice talking about extreme pain; the tracks on Spiral of Grief leaves me with more questions, more now than before. To this reviewer, these pieces are a kind of first act in a cinematic human story.

While the entire album is melancholic and seeped in dark ambient strands, the opener, “The Furthest From God,” begins as I close my eyes and transported to a distant part of the infinite universe. We hear a lone space explorer speak what seems like a mission log of how he cannot go on like this. Like Bowie’s Major Tom, it seems his circuits are dead and something is wrong. Heading “Memories Become Distant Rooms,” and I can’t help but wonder if our space explorer has found heaven. What a soundscape. These tender, long tones are like a welcoming voice of God. Were we deceived by our own fear? I am now unafraid and relaxed. What a beautiful track. “Weeping Arrows,” is the third stop on this ride—we are uncertain again as it is bookended with a rain storm. This song feels like uncertain discovery. Our explorer has landed and is now some place new.

All in all, artists work hard to create and God Body Disconnect (aka Bruce Moallem) is no exception. This is the projects 7th effort, and it seems simple yet conceptual and more complex than it may appear. Don’t forget, especially in this genre, the devil (or angels) are in the details.
