Matrix Grooves is rhythmic dub cubism, its strangeness strangely compelling.
Free Babyronia (Rodriguez Yukio, from Nagoya by way of Lima) chisels a dark, outlier techno out of dancefloor bedrock. Though teetering on the brink of off-kilter, he always maintains his equilibrium, but just. Threaded through the album’s stony angularity are seams of judicious, minimal melodic loops and the briefest glints of pop, symphony and even Baroque chamber music.
The clock-winding, Stanley Milgram anti-obedience electric shock punishment seems to indicate that the cause and effect of “Karma” is bad for everybody. The minor malfunctions of “Abyss” build up like silt, but Free Babyronia can also streamline jagged edges into smoother slices like “Sun_Cloud_Matrix,” the hypnotizing rotation beneath the sawblade rhythm of “>>>” or the sweet but sombre underbelly of “Swim.”
