Farron :: Shinrin Yoku (Shaw Cuts)

Shinrin Yoku projects cinematic quality narration within this captivating arc. Taking off from meditative control, progressions soon lead through saturated percussion that from the offset may seem slightly unsettling.

An ever-evolving bamboo maze

From explosive bass infused cuts to dub laden thuds, broken techno, and Detroit inspired themes, Farron’s debut for Shaw Cuts is a solid dozen pieces front to back. Noted as a sensory and intimate experience, there’s a hypnotic flow on each track, sometimes drifting and at times intensive.

Shinrin Yoku projects cinematic quality narration within this captivating arc. Taking off from meditative control, progressions soon lead through saturated percussion that from the offset may seem slightly unsettling. However, allowing the sonics to rush over and flood your premonitions quickly reduces nerves to adrenaline adjusting tendencies.

Dense terrains are sculpted from these ethereal exercises, and as if unescorted, maneuver in a way of an ever-evolving bamboo maze, only reverberate signals from above direct you in safety as these rhythmic dissections open up one’s third eye. Whilst this may feel completely free flow, there is an attention to detail which comes in the forms of filtration and flange, producing organic swirls to dizzying movements even within the most tame moments.

Each track presents its own highlight in my opinion, making it difficult to cherry-pick a favorite—never a bad thing. However, the ones that took over my body and soul completely are: “Hoog83” with its entrancing bass line, “WH Respiration” for its distant breaks reminiscent of closing sunrise sets, and finally “Toesbarn” and is abrasive grooves showcasing the harder side to Farron’s appetite.

Shinrin Yoku is available on Shaw Cuts November 5, 2021. [Bandcamp]
