exm (aka Jeroen Bax) rarely ceases to amaze. The maze of extraterrestrial electronics, organic sound structures, exploratory glitch bytes and disjointed rhythms are the soundtrack to a parallel universe.

Bandcamp users/fans have just the right snippet reviews capturing exm’s auditory traverse in a nutshell. For example, infinity noted that Overscore (+) is “…the sound of the future as it should be. Very unusual and rhythmic. It’s like a painting. Many paintings,” and fELiXhELiX accurately states that “…this one grows and grows and glows. Pure dirty, squelchy, colourful, inventive loveliness.” These two descriptions best describe where exm takes the listener and are certainly spot on. Some might recall that Overscore was also released as an extended player in 2016 (review here) and now we’re finally treated to the full album version.

Autechre influences aside, exm refines textured soundscapes, subtle melodic bursts and rhythmically blisful lava flows like very few do. Cascading through shades of mystery, darkness, and light flashes surrounded by tones and drones, these auditory miniatures are carefully accented by tangled low-end jolts and melodic fissures that expand and contract. Abandoned industrial wastelands and otherworldly electronic sound fields merge to form a mind-bending gelatinous glue.

If The Orb were to describe Overscore (+) it might as well be “…an ever growing pulsating brain that rules from the centre of the ultraworld.” And that pretty much hits the proverbial nail right on the head.
