E.R.P. :: Ancient Lights (Solar One Music)

The Hubble Telescope Series was established with clear intent. Founded with a space-soaked 12” of astral electro by Luxus Varta, the mission was to forge electronics in the form of worlds beyond our own. E.R.P. follows those first audio observations, those first communications, with Ancient Lights.

The title piece floats on subtle pads, beats being reduced to a trembling fizz. It’s from this foundation that wisps of melodies are born, silken synth lines soaring ever higher. Gravity is gone. Sounds rise, free from constraint. The only tether to this world is the beat, concise and consistent. “Gleaning Creation” sends bleeps into the sky, squelch and reverb orbiting lonesome patterns. “Eagle Nebula” maintains the solitude, but a new warmth enters. Chords cascade, curving around metallic clank and shadow. Rob Witsch, aka The Exaltics, closes this quartet with his take on the title piece. Weight is added in the form of juddering acid arpeggios, drum patterns clad in aluminium whilst those haunting melodies of the original ghost.

Gerard Hanson has had an amazing impact on electro. At one end of the spectrum: jamming machine burners; and at the other is Ancient Lights. Buttressing electronica with stripped rhythms, E.R.P. creates warm and vivid soundscapes as The Exaltics add some extra thrust for the floor.

Ancient Lights is available on Solar One Music.
