Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of — Drøn?
Flying under the radar seems to be the modus operandi for the German trio of Christoph Abert, Frederik Dahlke, and Ingo Zobel who have been crafting delicious ambient, electro, and IDM tunes since the late 90’s in relative obscurity. Highly active in the early 2000’s with releases on the influential German labels Elektrolux and Mikrolux, the Drøn project was all but gridlocked in 2002 after the release of their album Homeworld. While they still operated under their Signalform alias—the group did not return as Drøn until 2013 with a self-released experimental drone record hd188753.
Somewhat of a departure from their early material, hd188753 is seemingly a bit more focused on the avant-garde and musique concrète side of Drøn’s productions. Meandering drones and distant tones meet atmospheric field recordings provide the listener with a tremendous sense of solitude. Mostly off-the-grid, the album is not however without the occasional microscopic rhythm, drowned in washes of white noise and static.
Originally. there were only 50 copies of hd188753 distributed by the group from their Bandcamp site—but recently, Pulse State has reissued 100 more copies of this rare material from Drøn (a small number of which were also available through Touched Music). Billed as a “trip into outer-space” the record is best enjoyed in its entirety, perhaps while relaxing in a dimly lit setting and absorbing this excursion through minimalistic sonic territories.
