Christano Deison has previously collaborated with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Japanese noisenik KK Null, but for his latest collection of intimidating miniatures, he teams up with lesser-known but eminently talented Spanish cellist Sara Galan. Saturating their collective consciousness with the defeatist mantra “earth, swallow me” in order to fall into the right mood, Galan improvises on that most perfect of acoustic drone machines, while Deison envenomates its resonant body with manipulated field recordings, tapes and sundry “dirty” electronics.
The results are utterly different but conceptually akin to his previous solo album Quiet Rooms, which captured the drear ambience clinging to the walls and fabrics of a series of flea-bag hotel rooms. An eight-part cycle in which the brightest color is foggy grey, Cayendo‘s best moments come at you in waves that cause you to shiver.
