Davide Tonini :: Departure (Detroit Underground)

A powerful and balanced modular assortment worth every minute of your time to consume.

Exhibiting warmer audible structures

Modular machine sounds tend to exhibit warmer audible structures than traditional digital processing (at least to my ears), and with Davide Tonini at the controls, it’s sure to be enthralling. This album was created 90% with Eurorack and 10% G2X, and was recorded in one take. The result is that several months following Rigenerazioni, described as “looping textures and tones across a myriad of drifting soundscapes,” Tonini has culled, yet again, 9 more pieces with just as much pulsing ammunition and oomph.

“Swap,” positioned to kick-start the proceedings, is a delectable beauty of synth swells and rhythmic pitter-patter beats blurring our senses with melodic charisma. There are grittier moments and nostalgic flourishes on Departure as well. The blips and bleeps on “Sfamature” and “Neon Lights” bring goosebumps as they flicker across a dense stream of modular mastery. You might find yourself digging for remedies in Rimini (Tonini’s hometown) as “Asymmetrical” provides Plaid-inspired fractured technoid bliss during its wonderful sonic traverse, while the title track delivers parallel glitchy veils and drifting emotions to a tee. Ultimately, Departure nestles itself as a powerful and balanced modular assortment worth every minute of your time to consume.
