Daou :: Forgotten Stories (ROHS!)

Forgotten Stories is mostly comprised of atmospheric sonic experiments floating into the void, and at times merging into meandering memory streams filled with field recordings and wonder.

Using microscopic rhythms and discovered sounds, Paris-based architect, musician and multidisciplinary artist Daou—now residing in New York—takes listeners on a musical journey through ten short stories. “Overpass” begins with textured drone layers and gradually develops its musical character and nostalgic charm with a light crispness reminiscent of a bygone era. These ten compositions are thoughtfully crafted, and balanced with minuscule elements occasionally arising in the foreground but mostly remaining in the distance, much like forgotten and retrieved memories. Similar themes may be found in “Silent Garden” where Daou conveys delicate and enigmatic sensibilities with static pulses, where lullaby clicks and cuts feel translucent and non-visible. “Long way home” seems to be the conclusion of all that’s elapsed before us; perhaps drawing inspiration from parallel experimental sound designers Fennesz, Pole, and Oval.

Forgotten Stories is mostly comprised of atmospheric sonic experiments floating into the void and at times merging into meandering memory streams filled with field recordings and wonder. The horizon seems to get darker as “Interference” and “Vivid dreams” close off the album with familiar elements of tethered noise fragments that feel as light as air. Incredibly moving works of subdued audio art and long-forgotten tales brought back to life.
