Five electronic distortions from a dystopian world view
Scraping noises shuffle and filter their way through the mud courtesy of Christopher Lombardo (previously known as Silent Strangers)—with Cephalgian providing five electronic distortions from a dystopian world view. The industrial onslaught and torn dark-ambient noises all seem to coalesce, as if to migrate from some arcane machinery, “Eidolon Tides” comes to life as the minutes elapse. On “Blue Nine,” there’s a rhythmic channeling soundscape that, while blurry and opaque, delivers rapid-fire industrial blips’n bleeps until its eventual breakdown. The techniques and treatment that each track receives on Cephalgian are mind numbing (in a good way). Heavily processed and mangled noises are exposed on “Cynosure” and the slightly minimized closing track “Detached,” are nothing short of claustrophobic as “Lost Hive Process” delves into downtempo glitch strands and ethereal moods until it implodes with sonic shrapnel. A powerful listening experience.
