This is the debut for Scottish-based Christ. This seven track EP opens to the floating “A Dream of the Endless”. Lighter than air, the tinkling beat charms you seductively so that you may then be hypnotized by the words of the man on “Arctica”. Parts Sigur Ros, parts Boards of Canada, the melodies are deep and serene. Christ has a gray edge, a kind of downbeat without the trappings that come with the optimistic dance beat crammed in to sedate all palates. The title track floats aimlessly like dust at first, adding a cheery burst of sprite synths. “Fantastic Light’ is equipped with the attitude of Grace Jones and a probing set of sensibilities. Closing with the mystic “Absolum (for Lucy),” Christ steals a little something from the pop annals of perhaps Enigma, with its long airy passages and cryptic, hallowed vocals, though this is surely its grown up sister, and she’s a bit intolerant. Like a meandering mesh of antennae tracking a nerve center Pylonesque speeds in the right lane and manages to avoid all tolls.
Pylonesque is OUT NOW on Benbecula.
