(04.06.05) Nowadays Planet Mu is filled with jungle rhythms, either it’s oldskool stuff from Remarc retrospectives or it’s fresh grimey stuff from Mark One, Vex’d and Virus Syndicate. There are also a couple of artist borrowed from the actual drum’n’bass scene: Exile, who has an album comin’ soon, and the veteran Bizzy B who’s come back with hardcore ideas and new technology. The results are the storming Science EP’s III and IV, that are not merely a ’94 jungle revival but instead they take inspiration from that period to break new grounds with the help of some DSP techniques.
“Afraid Of The Dark” and “Merda Style 2004′” are perfect examples. Ultra fast breaks crash against amen rushes, while titanic reece synths invoke chants from the crowd. The bass is always huge and effective, even in the smoother tunes, like “16 Track Relick” or “Bad Boy Sound,” and it reaches maximum power in “Darkside” where it’s a four to the floor bass pulse that sets the pace of the track. There’s time for funky riffs and soulful tunes, like “Deep In My Soul” that features beautiful vocals, or the aforementioned “Bad Boy Sound” that charms the listener with a sublime melody before exploding with raw power.
This is the perfect music for those who wanted more of the Remarc stuff, and hopefully you’ll hear more from Bizzy B (the liner notes announce a Volume V and beyond), so let’s stay tuned. I only hope he will change his source of samples, since most of his tracks use speech from the Star Wars trilogy, which is much abused today. In the end, I think I’ll pass over these details and rinse these tunes to death.
Science EP’s Volumes III + IV is out now on Planet-Mu.
