The very first track sounds like Luke Vibert with chipmunk vocals, while the second track, “Twit and a Half” is more four-to-the-floor oriented. Like “Prefusely Mine,” these are tunes to make you dance smooth and funky, with those gorgeous basslines and sparkling arrangements. The beautiful “Wasted Space” merges bleepy melodies with sublime soulful singer Sheva Rutherford, and is one of the highlights of this mini-LP, something for those who like Super_Collider (Vogel and Lidell, not the software). “Boobies Bounce” shifts to broken beat territories, it’s so damn groovy you can’t resist playing it out loud and shaking your ass. “Summertime Settlement” slows the pace with warm synths and a calm, straight techno break. Finally, the relaxing outro “Towheaded Tot” leaves you happier and refreshed.
If you heard Pigeon Funk, also released on Proptronix, you may have an idea of how this EP might sound. If not, you must check it out because you’ll find it surprisingly creative and unique. Now let’s wait for the ragga EP on Planet-Mu, I’m sure it’ll be another mind fuck.
Smooth Hair is out now on Proptronix.
