Alva Noto :: HYbr:ID Vol. 1 (Noton)

These compositions are expansive in both textural and spatial awareness; succinct notions tail off with impulse responses, finally enveloping with the sub-minimal low end.

Astrophysics phenomena, fiction and performance movements

German audio-visual artist Carsten Nicolai (aka Alva Noto) presents HYbr:ID Vol. 1—the first instalment of a new series of works bringing together heterogeneous composition methods. The process of creating HYbr:ID Vol. 1 was defined by the search for a form to bind astrophysics phenomena, fiction and performance movements. Its narrative is inspired by cinematic visual techniques and static images portraying scientific events which also inspired the titles of the nine compositions. These compositions are expansive in both textural and spatial awareness; succinct notions tail off with impulse responses, finally enveloping with the sub-minimal low end.

Sound design in this release plays a pivotal role in generating a mood that has a tampered expression. Dark by nature yet inorganic from slight of touch in Nicolai’s masterful approach to deep research ambience and techno. An atmospheric listen from front to back that will surely make for an incredible live show, if there are plans to.

Accompanied with the CD and Vinyl options are graphic notations informed by the album’s sonic and acoustic codes. Those familiar with Alva Noto’s performances will take understandings from these images which are also represented in the video for “HYbr:ID oval p-dance.”
