What a succinct and sweet locomotive of an EP; 15_Billion Elektrovolt features seven tracks (6 originals and a digital bonus) of broken electro shards and melodic IDM / braindance grooves. The Rotterdam native reminds us of early 90s-era Aphex Twin (ref. “Saccharine Shine,”) Plaid (ref. “Galactic Gambo” digital bonus plus “The Mandragora,”) and Tri-Reletae-era Autechre (ref. “Multidimensional.”) Rhythms sputter and glitch as brisk and bass-heavy acid swirls flicker, and what remains is a classic amalgam of tried-and-true dulcet tones (ref. “15 Billion Elektrovolt”) submerged within darker blips’n breaks tracks like “Comic Bionic” and “Analogue Bubblebath”-tinged “Nibiru Desert.” Alberta Balsam certainly has our ears peeled for what’s in the pipeline as this EP needs a companion piece.
