A potent stream of subconscious dub artifacts

After years of honing their craft, Bulgaria’s Mahorka releases their debut vinyl Dawlat Lībiyyā, produced by Abu Ama + BedouinDrone. As a result, a bewildering assortment of Middle Eastern sound motifs, bubbling low-end reflections in dub, bass, rhythmic patterns, and tribal-infused beauty are produced. Hypnotic electronic music swirls through the upper plains of our atmosphere—a pulse dense with smoke, or is it just a thick fog? One can see how confidently and transporting both artists are within these seven compositions.

Perhaps the highlight of the lot—”Idris” and “Leptis Magna” release their soaring and muddy bass lines into the air as random found sounds and clanging noises permeate the soul. It’s an enigmatic collection of brooding music from far-off places that we were unaware even existed until now. The pair closes with “Assaraya al Hamra,” which is available exclusively digitally. Here, they dive into ethno-techno shapes that transform, flicker, and shift like nothing else we’ve heard lately. A potent stream of subconscious dub artifacts that demands your whole focus, Dawlat Lībiyyā is recommended for fans of Scorn, Vromb, Makyo, JK Flesh, and the more abstract dub / riddim sounds of Meat Beat Manifesto.

Dawlat Lībiyyā is available on Mahorka. [Bandcamp]
