Five questions for 33 Recordings

33 Recordings sheds some bits’n bytes regarding their net label operations, the latest Into Pieces compilation, how they came to be as well as other thoughts and intentions.

Igloo Magazine :: When did 33 Recordings start up and what was your inspiration?

33Rec :: A few years ago we started uploading our music in various music sites and forums under the name “33 Recordings.” The idea for the net label came afterwards, when we were looking for a way to share our music and ideas. So in March 2008 we launched our website (www.33recordings.com) and released our first compilation a2N. There you have it, 33 Recordings came true as a net-label and a team of passionate and creative electronic musicians and music lovers.

Igloo :: Who were some of your initial artist relations and did your location help or hinder progress?

33Rec :: From the beginning until now, we have had the opportunity to meet and be friends with some wonderful people and artists who support us the only way they know how through their music, technical support, calls for live shows and kind words. Our location didn’t matter all that much, being a net label and all. Our biggest promotion and contact was and is the Internet. Still, it’s best to get in touch with artists and get to know them in person, so we try to keep in contact with them as often as possible.

Igloo :: What were some of the challenges (if any) starting up a label and how did you envision the label to stand apart?

33Rec :: You could say that one of the challenges in the beginning was to find artists and make them trust us with their work and now, since there is always room for improvement, the biggest challenge is to better ourselves. As for standing apart, we do not have that intention. We just want to share good music with the world for free, simply because we like it.

Igloo :: What is your motivation in keeping the label moving forward into the next decade?

33Rec :: Thankfully there is still so much good music out there that needs to be found and heard, for decades to come!

You could say that one of the challenges in the beginning was to find artists and make them trust us with their work and now, since there is always room for improvement, the biggest challenge is to better ourselves.

Igloo :: Tell us more about how you (and your staff?) take the label’s “sound” to the listeners and fans. Distribution, campaigns, live shows, word of mouth etc.

33Rec :: Mostly through the web, using social networks such as Facebook and MySpace or Twitter and YouTube keeps our listeners in touch and lets them know our plans, projects, events, thoughts and intentions. We also use printed materials like flyers, stickers, t-shirts etc. And all that leads to live shows where our fans can enjoy our music.

A few words about our new compilation Into Pieces (read igloomag.com review here) ::

Already having in our roster over forty artists, it felt like a nice idea to release a compilation where all of them and more could participate! Through our label we come in touch with many amazing artists and friends who wanted to work with us. This makes us feel great and is an honor and privilege to have them all support 33 Recordings. There is a wide range of different artists and electronic music and this makes Into Pieces most representative of our sound. Therefore the compilation has the title Into Pieces because each artist contributes his/her own piece of music, work, genre, ideas and feelings. But because of its file-size, we smashed the compilation into pieces to be more easily downloadable and apt!
