Tennent’s Lager is delighted to announce details of artists appearing at this year’s Triptych Festival, which will take place between April 28th and May 2nd in venues around Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Reflecting the growing success and profile of Triptych, the formerly three-day venture this year becomes a heady five-day event. Full ticket and venue details can be found at www.triptych04.com.

George Kyle of Tennent’s Lager said: “Triptych is recognized as one of the most diverse music festivals in Europe, and is going from strength to strength each year. The only way we could top 2003 was to expand Triptych into a five-day event to truly do the programme justice.”

Background ::

Now in its fourth year, Triptych has fast established itself one of the UK’s most innovative and eclectic arts events – and a compelling attraction in the Scottish live music calendar.

Fusing a celebration of international legends, musical quality and a commitment to upcoming local talent, the diversity of previous Triptych programmes speaks volumes: while last year’s line-up included Grace Jones, Franz Ferdinand, Laurie Anderson, Manitoba, Carl Craig, Four Tet, Big Youth, Kid Koala and the Go Betweens, previous outings have seen Chuck D, Lee Scratch Perry, Jimmy Cliff, Lil’ Louie Vega, Roy Ayers, Terry Callier, Derrick May, Phillip Glass and Richie Hawtin grace the stages of Scotland.

Triptych 04 ::

Unbeatable? Until now: Triptych 04 is out to raise the stakes – revelling in the very best of the under-represented, the emerging and the legendary with our most expansive, exclusive, exciting and challenging line-up to date; and with two more days in which to party. Expect arch-electronica and old-school reggae; grizzled blues and avant-rock; deep soul and techno; indie; hip-hop; Brazilian; neo-classical, punk and beyond.

Tennent’s commitment to local talent continues apace: welcoming back Franz Ferdinand – who made their Triptych debut at an unsigned local showcase in 2003 – alongside fresh emerging talent such as the Fence Collective, Sons and Daughters, Uncle John and Whitelock, Frog Pocket and The Needles to name a few. Franz Ferdinand’s interstellar rising since their Triptych debut ensures a rabid welcome for the Glasgow four-piece; and suggests that all eyes will be on this year’s local talent gigs in a bid to catch a glimmer of next year’s stars.

This year’s film programme, meanwhile, offers an extended and exclusive array of seminal works: Soviet silent classic Storm Over Asia will feature an improvised accompaniment from Tuva’s Yat Kha; the Human Beatbox is delightfully explored in Breath Control; Sun Ra’s intergalactic space odyssey Space is the Place – its first-ever UK screening – will feature a discussion and Q and A session with its producer: jazz guru Jim Newman. Charlie is my Darling offers unreleased, behind-the-scenes access to the Rolling Stones during their legendary 1965 tour of Ireland, and will be presented by the film’s director – their former manager and infamous Sixties linchpin, Andrew Loog Oldham. Finally, the Can DVD offers a compelling insight into the methodology and personalities behind German sonic visionaries Can.

    Notes ::

  • In 2001, Tennent’s Lager launched Triptych Festival – a ground-breaking music and arts festival whose aim was clear: to inject the Scottish gigging calendar with a much-needed boost of quality, diversity and sonic adventure. An unrivalled programme of genuine international legends, under-exposed artists/genres and promising local talent has since become a Triptych mainstay.

  • The Triptych festival now annually presents over 200 artists, over three cities, with average yearly audiences of over 25 thousand.

  • Such is the growing success of the festival that this year Triptych’s programme has expanded to cover 5 days.

  • “One of the most interesting and eclectic music events in Scotland.” – The Sunday Times

  • “Scotland’s most pioneering music festival.” – The List

  • “Scotland’s best-curated and genuinely thought-provoking cultural extravaganza – and, yes, that does include the Edinburgh International Festival.” – The Herald

  • “The most diverse music festival in the country, TRIPTYCH has given the Scottish gigging calendar a much-needed boost.” – Scotland on Sunday

  • Our favourite Scottish festival’ – Jockey Slut

  • “Triptych has achieved a very rare thing – a festival of breadth and imagination that is sorely absent the closer to the Thames Barrier one goes.” – DJ

  • “Scotland’s three-city answer to the A-list urban festival circuit.” – Sleaze Nation
