The theme of aviation runs through The Twilight of Flight—but more with a sense of feeling and emotion instead of more obtuse sample method that ‘new/old’ sound is captured with a clarity ofte drenched in shoegaze effects by other artists.

Creating warmth and nostalgia

[Press Release] The Twilight of Flight is the latest project from Lincolnshire born electronic artist Soul Flask, available September 25, 2020 on Werra Foxma.

Tom Herdman has been making music for 20 years under several aliases, including Pottsq (releases include an EP in 2008 released on GoZombie), and with two LP’s as Wundertones, with the LP 2nd Genesis released via Body Control in 2015.

Soul Flask may be a relatively new guise for Tom, but it is arguably his most productive period of work to date with a self released LP and EP on Bandcamp since the Soul Flask Project began in July of 2019. His day job in the recycling industry provides inspiration through the discarded belongings of others. “I saw a broken thermos flask with all these old photos next to it. Peoples memories. Soul Flask just popped in my head. then set about taking inspiration for a musical project with influences taken directly from rubbish. Some musical instruments and old VHS tapes provided a catalyst of at least creating a musical message to this madness.

The theme of aviation runs through The Twilight of Flight—but more with a sense of feeling and emotion instead of more obtuse sample method that ‘new/old’ sound is captured with a clarity ofte drenched in shoegaze effects by other artists. Soul Flask’s heavy use of SH-101/Juno 106/Alpha Juno sounds and creative x0x / MPC rhythms create warmth and nostalgia but not in a way to draw direct parallels with the giants of lo-fi electronica. That said, fans of Orbital will love the angular, melodic 808 workout of “The Starling,” and the lo-fi trippy dizziness of single “Six Miles Down” will appeal to fans of Boards of Canada’s pre-Warp releases.
