There’s a new Proem (nee Richard Bailey) coming down the wires soon. Until Here for Years (n5MD) arrives just one month shy of the 20th anniversary of Proem’s debut album Burn Plate No. 1 (Hydrant). It’s a return to soundscapes and forms Bailey is better known for as in 2010’s Enough Conflict (n5MD). There are the usual hallmarks of Proem’s sound in use here along with new methods and means. Drawing from such diverse sources as JSON documents, synthesizer schematics, hex values, and even SVG files are used as a basis for creative input and creation here.
Until Here For Years is a shifting affair, with metallic rhythms and beats twisting around shards and pieces of synth pads and basses throbbing in and out of the sonic spectrum. “Cuddle Buddy” comes in like angels at war with uplifting synth strings and leaves on a glitching, crumbling note of destruction. Other tracks like “False Hope” come at the ears with a heavy hip-hop beat like a stalking gangster then utilizes unexpected sound sources and treatments for a startlingly subtle yet grooving effect. There’s a lot to unpack and examine here for the chin scratchers as well as those looking for a plain old good listen.
Until Here For Years is out n5MD April 19th on 180 gram burnt yellow vinyl, limited to 250 units worldwide, Digipak compact disc and ultra limited Minidisc. [Pre-order]
