“In this Amalgamix 2015 I wanted to mash up my favorite dance tracks into one huge mega mix. An Amalgamix is what I call my style of mixing in which I mash up multiple tracks simultaneously together throughout the entirety of the mix, creating a constant flow of amalgamated of music.
I love lush, heavily layered music with lots of melody and varying intricate rhythms. I try to take opposing sounds such as a very beautiful piece and mix it on top of gritty heavy beats. Often times I will combine multiple melodies and beats attempting to create something that sounds novel.
This particular mix started with Chris Rubrene of (Telesthesia: Sound System Circuitry) asking me if I wanted to DJ at his annual How The West Was Once desert party. I was exuberant but somewhat intimidated since it was my first time DJ’ing and I would be doing it with established KUCI veterans such as himself and Dennis Simms. I had made mixes before, notably my first Amalgamix featured here at Igloo Magazine, but I had never performed live.
Using Ableton Live and Push as my controller, I practiced extensively. When the party came around I was able to perform my set successfully but I was not completely satisfied with the mix that I had done. So over the next few months I started changing and layering even more tracks over it until I felt I was creating my own stylized amalgamation of my favorite dance music.
