An exquisite take on acrobatic acid-drenched electronics

Braindance in the truest sense, the artwork on Brainlores Vol.2 by Woodpecking Mantis (love the artist name) captures unique sound dynamics for Concrete Collage. An exquisite take on acrobatic acid-drenched electronics and instrumental workouts packed with fluid drumming, bass, and shifting rhythm blasts, this release packs a punch. Reminiscent of Feed Me Weird Things-era Squarepusher—here we have precision drum’n bass mingling with video-game blips’n bleeps as (almost) all tracks maneuver through tangled melodies with ease. While this release offers saturated electronic sound fields, it seems as if something went completely wrong midway through on “ABitTooMuch” when the artist scorches the landscape with an overly processed eruption of digital fluctuation for a mere 59 seconds—perhaps an interlude to take us through the balance of its tracks. Other than the dense data crunch, Brainlores Vol.2 is a highly contagious and welcomed slice of acid-infused braindance breaks, bass, and brash compositions from outer space.

Brainlores Vol.2 is available on Concrete Collage. [Bandcamp]
