An ambient illusion of industrial mainstay, featuring strict piano verse, electronic sampling and experimentation of pure sound.
[Release page] Play Piano and Sounds fuses the talents of both Laurent Perrier and Laurent Pernice, formerly of French Industrial band Nox, to produce an expressive concept of styled workings that are exhibited on this latest collaboration.
The work of Laurent Pernice features on “Solar,” “You Take My Heart Forever,” “Fausse Route,” “Aquafish” and “Equation Part 6” while Laurent Perrier’s compositions include, “Situation,” “Mauvais Oeil,” “Frolements” and “Bout Portant.”
With regards to Play, Piano and Sounds, this is perhaps a little too avantgarde for the general listener to embrace; i.e. the more generic enthusiast of electronica who seeks a marathon of red hot samples and enough synth swirls to make themselves dizzy.
It is of sheer melancholic essence – laid back with a naked vulnerability all of its own bearing, not that this makes things any easier. There is no smooth unfolding world of tuneful samples and emotive pianos, purely because of the approach taken. The work itself borders on the unmusical, in that it largely runs to experimentation of sounds, rather than any tuneful hooks and melodic lines that one would expect to soar to great heights.
That said, there are plenty of evocative stirrings, expressed by way of field recordings, and gentle rhythm, but nothing that really forms substance and a true mission statement. It would be wrong to say that this wasn’t a fine sampling of composition and experimentation, but it really is difficult to see and feel in the cold light of day.
An ambient illusion of industrial mainstay, featuring strict piano verse, electronic sampling and experimentation of pure sound. If that’s your thing, you may well enjoy it.
Play Piano and Sounds is out now on Sound On Probation. [Release page]
