(03.09.06) During the winter of 2004, a number of likeminded record labels simultaneously had the idea of co-operating with each other to unify the thriving yet fragmented London electronic music scene. Out of a common desire for promote quality electronic music in the capital Seed, Ai, Uncharted Audio, Suburb, Expanding and Highpoint Lowlife joined forces. Add to the mix MP3 download site bleep.com, graphic designers Build, club promoters Further and the retail know-how of respected record stores Smallfish and Poke, and you have a real force to be reckoned with. The collective was christened London Electrics.

LE:01 is the debut release from London Electrics and features 2 exclusive tracks from each label involved. As you would expect from the line-up of labels, the emphasis is on beat infused melodic electronic music. Contributions from the likes of Benge, Bovaflux and Blamstrain emphasize the calm, melodic and superbly serene side of this album. Each of these three opening tracks illustrate the seemingly effortless super-cool electronic brilliance these labels specialize in. Vessel, Jacen Solo and Fisk Industries focus more on breaks and rhythms but still maintain the same air of relaxed ease. In a slightly darker mood is Digitonal’s “Cantus V” with its abstract tone and orchestral accompaniment. LJ Kruzer follows suit with “What Was Your Day Like,” a somber track utilizing a TV sample that poses the question asked in the title. Posthuman’s “Fall of Empire” covers a range of moods, going from ethereal to manic in just 6 minutes. Luckily, 11t1 are on hand to provide a gentle and uplifting summery tune (complete with birdsong) in the form of “GuacOff().” On a more clinically precise tip is Line’s album closer “A Mistake” that turns out to be a memorable vocal track. Yes, a song! …with lyrics and everything.

The common thread that links the 6 labels contributing tracks to this release is their passion for quality super-cool electronic music. As a debut release, LE:01 sets a high standard for things to come. The London Electrics crew promises more releases and a lot more activity very soon. Watch this space!

LE:01 is out now on London Electrics.
