With his guitar, London’s John Scott has found an Archimedean point from which he can move the world. Looping and self-sampling, he opens Murmurations with a twenty-four minute statement piece. “FWD>>” has something processional, plush and almost haughty about it, but gradually shedding its gilded brocade, it becomes lighter than air. Perhaps “FWD>>” should be called “UPWD^^. ” “Dilute” is a mantra and a single dragonfly and then a whole squadron drawn in by its centripetal force, that becomes confused, pacified and individuated by the mantra. Each finds its own bliss. “Bright Light” beseeches and finds a lovely circuitous melody that devolves down into itself like embracing arms, arms that paradoxically become colder and more metallic as they enfold. A pretty much perfect album.

Murmurations is available on Echoic Memory.
