There isn’t meant to be much light on this EP, it’s largely an enticing creation of dark and foreboding imagery. Put subtlety, it’s a busied tower block of electric messages, diving into many areas with its diverse beats and varied bass lines.
[Listen | Purchase] Celestial Sadist is the second release in 2010 from Matt J Watts under his Debunkt moniker. Superbly produced, it presents an inspiring map of sounds. It’s colored with the sophistication that came with the old school rave culture, making it one to remember; a wonderful traditional sounding house style electronic experiment.
“Telecommunications,” gives off that signature extraterrestrial buzz like extravaganza, with a powerful lifeline, largely electrified and laser like; always pointing to the magnificent bleep city of fluorescent lights and vintage dance culture (audio stream below). Some how this mid paced track of the dark eccentric, manages to be urgently busy, seeking out amplified directions. It finally settles on destination, resolving in the most mysterious way with pulses of lasers. The theme is set to continue into “Everything’s OK” – pointing the way with its static overtones. Not as tuneful as the previous track, but nonetheless offering some inspiring placements of sharp noises with stark contrast. High pitched tone leads throughout, making sharp points as it moves along, occasionally accompanied by additional percussive layers while gentle cymbals fill the gaps between the synth layers. The live sounding percussive crashes really enhance the EP with dynamic rhythms. “Celestial Sadist” is constructed of the more simple building blocks – containing even more weight with a dark edgy vocal effect that insists on casting eerie shadows over dark damp pavements, with reflections of heavy bass lines that prod at every piece of street furniture. The mid section is a great solo of melodic feel and bendy texture, weaving a web over all that has gone before. There are gentle yet effective percussive embellishments, lingering in the background, yet remaining crystal clear. I’ve not heard anything so interesting in a good while. “Earthed” (featuring John Bionic on vocals) almost starts with a Hammond like organ sound that’s brief, before heading into its signature strong bass, almost possessing a vocal expression all of its own. Suddenly the vocal track itself kicks in – a rap styled presentations; an interesting mix but perhaps taking some of the mystery out of the track. More experimentation comes in the form of percussion arrangements and contrasting crashes.
