Mindelixir :: Lunology (Outside)

Taking cues from the likes of Joker and Clams Casino, Mindelixir segues oddly delicate melodies in juxtaposition against bravado vocal stabs and the boom / snap of the 808.

Lunology finds North Carolina based producer Bill Schimel (aka Mindelixir) serving up an enticing combination of slo-mo melodic trap versus sci-fi R&B—perfect for pool side lounging or coasting around town with the car roof down and the speakers booming. Despite the cosmic title, and a self described genre of “trap for a strip club on the moon,” there’s a definite summery feel throughout this release. Hip Hop vocal snippets rub up against 808 cow bells and snares plus there’s plenty of pitch shifted shenanigans with samples on staccato repeat or hammering out oddball rhythmic melodies.

Taking cues from the likes of Joker and Clams Casino, Schimel segues oddly delicate melodies in juxtaposition against bravado vocal stabs and the boom / snap of the 808. “Ho What” takes this style to infectious levels with scatter gun samples and a melody you may feel you’ve heard somewhere before. Title track “Lunology” is all spooked R&B with ghostly vocals flitting around a dastardly roller of a beat. Closing track “Western Crash” ups the neck cracking crunch with bonkers melodies bubbling around the ubiquitous 808 kick.

There’s acres of space and air between the sounds—a less is more stripped back approach certainly being the ethos here. Whilst beats per minute are kept super slow, double speed excitements occupy the rest and all manner of bleeps, bloops and wibbles keep things as spacey as they are warm.

If you like your bass music minimal with a cheeky dose of melody then Lunology is well worth a listen.
