[Release page] French DJ and composer Nathalie Garcia—now relocated to Brussels, Belgium—who operates under the Baby Kruger alias, unveils Selkie, a tour-de-force that maneuvers itself in fields of tumultuous sound design. But it’s not only a batch of experiments, instead what Baby Kruger does is quite astounding and timeless. Rugged and chiseled beats ricochet their echoes among microscopic acidic overtones and rhythmic pulsars (take “Inse Catt,” for example). Crossing the wires between Richard Devine’s avalanche of electronics and Marching Dynamic’s permeating subtlety, Selkie marries these alien worlds to form an electro-industrial sheen—have a listen to the far-reaching acoustics of “Oyskjeggar” as a prime target. “Sexual Shetland” is another propulsive entity that doesn’t follow pre-conceived notions of signal processed chaos—a clicks’n cuts flow of buzzing, clangs and tribal spheres slither their way into the subconscious. All the while, a definitive Phoenecia / RD sound surrounds this track. Joe Lentini’s remix of “Sexual Shetland” takes a more danceable approach—electro at its roots, a dark shadow is cast and a solid groove expelled from its edges. Overall, while Selkie is six-parts Baby Kruger and one-part remix, the result is an absorbing, all-encompassing slab of surreal electro, slippery to the touch but grounded in texture and form.
