For the 12” Legowelt has created some deep house sounds, jacking floor pelters and laid back electronics; an artist going strong, and getting stronger proving this one to be an excellent release.

Legowelt 'North Sea Spectrum'

Europe may be in the grip of a cold snap, but there’s enough of a thaw in the UK to keep the vinyl flowing. Newcastle’s Signals have been bearing the brunt of that western wind with good cheer and new releases on their minds. On the back of John Heckle’s excellent release comes something new from Danny Wolfers, aka Legowelt. Mr. Wolfers is a man who likes to run a theme through his releases. It’s the mineral riches off the coast of Britain that are in his sonorous sights with North Sea Spectrum.

Legowelt isn’t a stranger to Signals, acting as remixer on the label’s debut release. Here The Hague resident is given a full twelve inches to work his synth magic. “Spring Equinox” gets things underway. The track is a slow building house affair. A padded bass kick straddles a deep backdrop before hi-hats arrive alongside a solid beat. Legowelt has been experimenting with acid sounds in some of his more recent outings. North Sea Spectrum keeps the 303 running. Legowelt sleuths for “Bergearac Professional,” an acid tweaked homage to John Nettles’ investigations. The Daddy of the EP opens the flip side—”What Time Is It?” sees walls melt, a squalid acid line eroding the bricks whilst samples and heady synths invade. A hardy piece of house with echoes of Bam Bam. “How Things Are” turns down the temperature—a slow muggy piece of electronics laps a shore of slight claps.

There’s a problem with high productivity, it can dilute quality. Over exertion damaging the end result. A thinning of resources leading to a poorer outcome. Legowelt flies in the face of such assumptions, an his work rate being an exception to the above premise. The Netherlander has been increasing his output over the years, with the music persistently hitting the right notes. North Sea Spectrum is no exception to the Wolfer’s exception. For the 12” Legowelt has created some deep house sounds, jacking floor pelters and laid back electronics; an artist going strong, and getting stronger proving this one to be an excellent release.
