Channeling a constantly shifting industrial-glitch unease
Dragon‘s latest eight-piece suite takes its title from an ancient symbol depicting a dragon or serpent consuming itself in an endless cycle. While Ouroboros cuts through a haze of distorted glitch rhythms, its central atmosphere remains rooted in a sophisticated yet precisely calibrated investigation of technology and transformation, as outlined in the accompanying liner notes. Throughout, leftfield electronic sensibilities intersect with vast spatial design and a mechanistic minimalist framework layered with glitch-industrial detail.
Opening piece “Approaching the Fixed Point” unfolds through subtle yet surreal sonic abrasion, its dark ambient undercurrent continually shifting beneath a restrained surface. “Luxx” inhabits more familiar territory, weaving together raw laser-like pulses, while “Irrational Topology” develops its own distinctly Autechrean propulsion through compressed blips and shuffling beat fragments.
“Wave Function Collapse” and “Vetch” occupy an unusual pairing, their squelching static tendrils exposing a brittle rhythmic sputter that launches the proceedings into a higher orbit. Meanwhile, slippery abstract modulations within “The Last Null Tensor Before Morning” appear to excavate mechanized vocal manipulation. Elsewhere, persistent cycles of rupture, fragmentation, and decay drive penultimate cut “Inline Conditional,” finding Dragon at his most compelling; channeling a constantly shifting industrial-glitch unease.
As sound disintegrates into countless microscopic particles, closing sixteen-minute opus “Beginning Is End, End Becomes Beginning” proceeds to unsettle spatial perception itself. A standout composition capable of existing independently, it gradually dissolves from hazy exhaust into advanced digital signal processing that feels remarkably forward-looking.
