What sets Materia Vibrante apart is how deeply it connects on both a sensory and emotional level. It’s the kind of album that doesn’t so much ask for your attention as it gradually envelopes you, pulling you inward.
Textural currents that hum
Until now, I was regrettably unfamiliar with the work of Spanish sound artist Susana López. That changed the moment I pressed play on Materia Vibrante, and within minutes, I knew I had discovered something truly special. This immersive, quietly powerful album has quickly become one of my favorite releases of 2025 so far—a masterwork of drone-based ambient composition that feels as physical as it does emotional.
Released via Austin, Texan label Elevator Bath, Materia Vibrante (“Vibrant Matter”) lives up to its name. López sculpts sound with the tactile sensitivity of a field recordist and the patient intuition of a deep listener. The album’s foundation lies in subtly buzzing drones—textural currents that hum, oscillate, and shimmer just beneath the surface, gently engulfing the listener in a cocoon of resonant tone. These drones are never static or inert; they vibrate with life, constantly shifting and revealing new layers, like light playing across the surface of moving water.
Rather than aiming for cinematic bombast or overt melodic structures, López opts for a more elemental approach. Her compositions unfold with a slow, organic grace, allowing time and space to stretch and breathe. Her tracks feel as though the air itself is vibrating, charged with memory and presence. There’s a rich tactility to the sounds she uses—grainy textures, faint feedback, ghostly harmonics—that ground the music in the physical world, even as it pulls your mind into a blissful, liminal state.
Like the earth humming beneath your feet ::
What sets Materia Vibrante apart is how deeply it connects on both a sensory and emotional level. It’s the kind of album that doesn’t so much ask for your attention as it gradually envelopes you, pulling you inward. There’s a warmth to its drones, a subtle pulse that feels like the earth humming beneath your feet. As abstract as the music can be, it radiates an intimate, deeply human energy.
López’s command of restraint and nuance is exceptional. Each piece feels both meticulously restrained and completely alive, shaped by intuition as much as by intention. The transitions are fluid, the moods gentle but persistent, and the experience as a whole feels less like listening to an album and more like entering into a sustained meditation—one where time melts and the body dissolves into sound.
With Materia Vibrante, Susana López has created a quietly monumental album—one that resonates far beyond its minimal means. I’m disappointed it took me this long to discover her work, but I’m deeply grateful to have found it now. This is a record I’ll be returning to often. A slow-burning revelation, and without question, one of the most absorbing listens of the year.
