Tape :: Opera (Hapna)

422 image 1 Tape is Andreas and Johan Berthling and Tomas Hallonsten. Opera is a sort of a symphony for nearly 20 different instruments, including field recordings, zither and with a nod to Maestro Cage, even paper. With an air of desolate space “Feeler” is a lazy track muted, with whispy edges and paralyzed vibration. An organic mélange of phantom dialects speaking in anthropomorphic tongues lighting the night like fireflies making the rounds. There is nothing haphazard about this lively recording, with “Radiolaria” as a prime example. The strings pleasingly sing and sway as a porch swing in a Southern summer breeze. “Noises from a Hill” sets up an idyllic ambiance by way of tranquil harmony and bittersweet Mogwai-like charms. The sound space is wide. Slightly more dizzying is “Return to Ship” bathed in disoriented accordian and the undertow of a Batman-like theme riff that is shaded in the remote background. However odd, ending this Opera with a track called “Rut” could perhaps be the collective voice of all artists who painstakingly rack their brains and ruffle some feathers creating and developing innovative ideas. We all share the common bond of being fallible and reckless. Thank heavens!
