Many labels carve a path that is unique and full of potential, especially when it comes to a debut release. For Project Aristotle, the mission is quite simple: Producing a “mish-mash of hip-hop, glitch, ambient, and all points in-between.” Project Aristotle: Year One features two cuts by each artist including Dura, General Musician, Highdropod, Second Thought and Sisk.
An interesting point that displays itself clearly on Year One is that variation is the vehicle that propels this disc from one genre to another. From the rugged hip-hop textures of General Musician’s “Subtler” to Sisk’s mysterious micro-tweaks of “White Powder Bubbles Part 5” there’s a slanted path of electronics on this compilation that has a soft and sincere focus. “Rooftops,” a track by Second Thought, meanders peacefully into the desert while “Clouds” takes atmospheric debris and shifts it ever so slightly above piano driven melodies and sharply echoed percussion. Dura’s drifting clip-hip ambiences on “Del Sol” and “Beacon Hill” wouldn’t be too far off from the style of electronified hip-hop that Florida’s Merck Records produces. Highdropod brings a downbeat sample infused groove to the mix on “Electrostatic Bubble Charmer” and “Scuba Snack,” rounding this disc off quite well.
Overall, Project Aristotle: Year One introduces a casual dose of rhythms that are geared more towards downbeat ambient audiences interested in a fresh approach to relaxed electronic listening.
