Poppy H creates dubby, almost aquatic sound structures that are characterized by a downtempo lo-fi feel and whirling electrical debris fields. These sounds, believe it or not, are captured and generated using a cell phone microphone. The roughed-up vocal samples from the lead single “Kyushon” float into the background between jumbling experimental soundtracks and deteriorating piano and percussion, ending with a melancholic hint. The quicker paced, “Oh Glory!” features low-end wobbling soundscapes floating in the background and occasional drum flickering that eventually builds into an instrumental (and almost tribal) cacophony. With its minimal deconstruction and industrial experimentation, the closing track “Cry Sis” creates an unsettling atmosphere that feels like it’s being dragged through a thick fog of harsher clicks and cuts. A much-needed escape that’s as euphoric as it is spine-chilling.
