VV.AA_320 summarises Waste-Editions. Four tracks that blend styles as diverse as horror disco, synth wave, and electro whilst keeping an eye firmly on the floor. A cracking compilation and a perfect expression of what this exciting Spanish label is all about.
For three years Waste-Editions has been forging its own musical path. Based in Almería, Spain, Carlos Martín’s imprint has focussed on the more melodic side of synth music, with forays into electro, reimagined wave and modern flavoured disco. To this date the format chosen has been mini-LPs, with the likes of Chile’s Visionia, Dead Husband from the U.S., and the homegrown talent of WLDV all dropping some cracking records. 2019 marks a new venture, the first compilation and one that brings together past names alongside debutants.
Boston’s Dead Husband get the ball rolling with a stern beat. Around this snapping snare swirl smoky synthesizer trails as melodies bubble and simmer. The track melts a number of styles with no one genre coming to the fore. Bilbao’s WLDV follows. Cascading chords flex and ripple next a thick kick as “Inner Communications” lands. Brimming with energy, this offering simply sings from the needle drop. Samples swim amidst the generous breaks with sweetened keys sailing above the galloping percussion. Superb. Martín opens the flip under his Mynationshit moniker. Rumbling arpeggios hide a steady beat while beaming strings build for “Dull Mentor.” Although the track courses with the same bright brilliance that characterises WLDV’s contribution, darker moments are also folded into the piece. Anything but dull. Cold Colors close with arguably the moodiest of the quartet. A tight rhythmic pattern supports broad keys while brooding notes descend in a wonderfully reflective finale.
