Following split 12”s for Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and L.I.E.S., TX Connect is occupying an entire slab of wax with You Too.

I’ve mentioned Australia before with electronic music, but only once or twice. Down Under has never been a hotbed for incandescent electronics. True there are some musical whispers here and there, but in general all is quiet on the Southern front. It’s for that reason that Adelaide Soundworks caught my attention. The eponymous imprint has been founded by Simon Jakubowski and Jeremy Plawecki and the twosome are immediately taking a lengthy trip for their first release. Dallas is the destination and TX Connect the artist. Following split 12”s for Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and L.I.E.S., TX Connect is occupying an entire slab of wax with You Too.

The title track opens, the first rays landing on the city. Analogue rich House unfurls. Beats are central, toms, cymbals and claps bending under thick bars and lighter lines for a warm and inviting track. Grittier moments arrive with “Trash,” the sun setting. Squalor is given form with generous distortion and squelching bass. A weighty piece of music, melodies struggling to stay aloft in the heavy churn of machinery. “Hammock At Hurricane Hill” is the culmination of its predecessors. Those early morning moments of “You Too” are countered by jagged 303 bars and a traffic jam of drums. Coarse piano stabs try to pierce the black but are inevitably snuffed out by the deluge of ash as night takes hold.

An Adelaide imprint is a bold undertaking. Obvious distribution issues and proximity to the main markets of the US and Europe could dampen spirits before they even had time to kindle. But such problems haven’t stopped Adelaide Soundworks. The two man label’s ambition, coupled with a fine first release, finds the Australian imprint on a firm foundation. Likewise, TX Connect is adding to his impressive back catalog with a full EP of diverse electronics.

You Too is available on Adelaide Soundworks.
