With the already existing Press-Release featured in Igloo Magazine, this review of Tim Koch’s latest outing will give a general overview of what to expect on his latest (remix) release with Australia’s Aural-Industries label.

To begin with, the title of this remix project was inspired by the original release of Koch’s Please Don’t Tell Me That’s Your Volvo also on Aural-Industries. With the varied experiments and 8-bit electronic flows featured on Please Don’t.., an inspired group of talented remixers from around the globe began to remix selected cuts from this album to create the well-crafted 15-track Please Don’t Tell Me That’s Your Remix full-length CD compilation.

A quirky feeling flows around this remix project CD.. inspired by the melodic tendencies Koch has for video-game styled beauty, the artists on this compilation including Jet Jaguar, Proem, Goto80+Extraboy, Bloq, Mr. Projectile, Disjunction Reunion, Quark Kent, Yunx, Novel23, Bauri, Raven, Ten & Tracer, Vim!, Adrien75, and Coffee Table all manage to extract their own bits and pieces of original sound-sculptures to recreate precious electronic symphonies within each track. Digital gems are tucked away next to funky laid-back arrangements.

With the assortment of remixers featured on this disc, there are sure to be plenty of highlights for each listeners tastes.

Tim Koch :: Mine Is Yours, MD (n5MD)
    ….

As the Northern California based n5MD label blossoms with its unique roster of multi-talented musicians, Tim Koch’s Mine Is Yours full-length MiniDisc features a collection of remixes he’s crafted for artists in almost every continent.

The remixes featured on this MD displays many of Koch’s musical styles. Ranging from upbeat melodic-driven ambiences to gritty bass-heavy experimentations, these 15 tracks span through Tim’s signature 8-bit Atari-influenced electronics and multi-percussive fragments. While each track is layered with unique downbeat rhythms, only a few of them manage to keep the listeners interest long enough to enjoy the whole release: these include remixes for Lawrence English’s “Room40.Broken English”, Proem’s “Early Rings.Late Night Pick Up Window Mx” and Hrvatski’s “Attn.Cats Funtitled Mx”. With the emphasis placed on stretched melodies, most of Mine is Yours relies on relaxed electronic sounds that are enjoyable but not totally satisfying. (Artists remixed by Tim Koch include PEM, Suvome, Lawrence English, Brunatex, Mr. Eel, Fourplay, Proem, Marumari, Lackluster, Hrvatski, Dial, Codec, MD, and Skoop).

Mine is Yours is out now on n5MD.

Tim Koch :: Shorts in Alaska, CD (DeFocus)
    ….

    345 image 3

Shorts in Alaska is one of Tim’s finest releases to date. Having recorded for numerous labels over the past several years, this release was highly anticipated and received excellent reviews since its arrival back in 2001 on UK’s once flurishing DeFocus Records. 16 tracks of gorgeous Detroit inspired rhythms are casually placed against pensive electronic art formations. A particular highlight on Shorts in Alaska is the emotionally upbeat “Lull” (Previously released on AI) that wraps highly percussive beats next to a thick bassline and sparkling melodic outbursts. “Flatlook”, “Slack Magic” and “Switch Invert” have an inspirational yet brooding experimental touch that unfolds into unique electro-accoustic gems. Electronic tears of joy seamlessly fall on tracks like “Bananalution”, “Blat” and “Fobile Moaning” while “Gills I’d Grow” extracts some of the most influential Detroit textures from artists like Carl Craig and Kenny Larkin.

Shorts in Alaska is nurtured by very emotional musical fragments while retaining a unique landscape of pleasantly crafted rhythms. Out of the three releases covered in this review retrospective, this title remains at the top of the pack to this day. Layers upon layers of beauty were created and released on this album for the listener to absorb and enjoy. IGLOO MAG RECOMMENDED.

Shorts in Alaska is out now on DeFocus.
