Modular mayhem maestro Syl Kougaï makes a comeback with his Modular Series • Season-02 and the title of the first four episodes—A Journey into Organic Chaos—is fitting as it seamlessly takes us on a voyage through “reality-warping” soundscapes, industrial tropes, and crumpled electronic trails. The EP’s swaying core rhythms also drift through roughened concrete slabs where the opening track “Children of the Orb” bends magnetic blips and bleeps; glitching at just the right angles. With its pulsating sonic organisms and subtle sparks ricocheting in all directions, the second piece “Love dies from everything” slows the pace just a bit, yet “Metanoïa” dives headfirst into musique concrète corridors, where shattered noises and pulsing glitch mechanics erode before our eyes and ears, sounding alive and breathing.

And that’s where Syl Kogaï finds solace within these squelchy modular contours; the constantly manipulated spheres of sound he’s able to coalesce is astounding (just listen to the elongated ambient bubbles of “Within the ground swell (Long Version),” which burst and collapse into serene paths of technoid and electronica in a seventeen-minute epic transmission). Season 2 captures the “strange and captivating modular / industrial ice sheets” of Season 1 with a tightly constructed modular smorgasbord, making up only a third of what is anticipated in this 3-episode series. What this all means is that the upcoming chapters are eagerly anticipated.
