Textural sound divisions
Laine Skaggs aka scndphase is an electronic musician from Washington, USA. With only a 2-track self release to their discography, we see their debut label release with Chilean based Infinito Audio titled Carrying. Probably one of the shortest EP’s I have had the pleasure of reviewing, at a timely 8 minutes 23 seconds for 4-tracks, what scndphase lacks in duration is complexity in both textural sound divisions and innovative instrumentation choices.
Opening with glitched out “129,” introduces us to broken beats and resonated sample contortion. Before you know it we abruptly jump into the next track; what I can appreciate about these jarring options is that it showcases the fragmented choices in narrative and unconventional production—it feels reminiscent of old home video tapes that would just dramatically fall out of shot with some distortion before clipping back into something completely different; the juxtaposition feels thought out.
The remaining three tracks sees scndphase expand into vocal dexterity with performances in rhyme and octave edits. Personal favorite is the emotionally tapping “Bleeding Core,” that finally feels like scndphase is picking up the momentum as this track is the longest in the pack at just shy of 2 and a half minutes.
A beautiful taster that yearns the listener the desire to unpack more in future releases!
