A triumphant work of soaring vitality and energy
Arriving hot on the heels of 2024’s stunning Brutalist (Slowfoot), Robert Logan drops the other sonic shoe with Regenesis—released on Evel. Logan clearly shows no intention of either slowing down nor producing anything less than the complex, evocative and multifaceted acts of music he is known for. Having delved into deep dark territories with Brutalist, we see another side of these visions in Regenesis, a triumphant work of soaring vitality and energy.
There’s a sense of uplift and renewal in these songs amidst soundscapes of shimmering tones and swirling progressions. “Voice of Oxidation” and “Earthlink” give life to the album, opening with a warmth and complexity of an intricate jewel. “Spectra” wraps itself around your ears, proceeding to take you through a carefully controlled maelstrom of light and dark realms while the eponymous title track is the sound of life finding its way towards maturation. “Stomata” brings warm tones in Logan’s unique phrasing to brilliant success. “Riser” is an epic; living well up to its name as it brings listeners up into stratospheres unheard of while strong drums march it forward.
The album pushes forward with “Veiled Earth’s” off-kilter rhythms and detuned chords calling forth fragments of fever dreams and half-stored memories while “Children of Rust” is spiky, loud, and insistent like the memories of a forgotten world. “Clouds Fade” swells triumphant with sparse beats, murmuring synth details and a heavenly host of synthesis towards a profound climax. “Out of the Womb, into the Tribe” calls forth memories of youth and freedom with a light air of nostalgic warmth and calm before working into a stormy, darker ending. “An Outer Darkness” closes the album with Logan’s beautiful piano solo buoyed by drifting, swirling soundscapes in a melancholic, saudade infused piece that sums up the entirety of this Regenisis.
Regenesis is a must for any fan of electronic music especially the more ear-based works of Monolake, Bola, and Autechre, and comes highly recommended!
