Nonturn :: Territory (Audiobulb)

It is the synchronicity between organic and mechanical elements that galvanizes Territory and its longterm effects. Nonturn paints an aural canvass made from processed field-recordings and scattered noises yet somehow manages to temper the turbulence with control and clarity.

What happens when a broken washing machine interacts with the kitchen blender? It’s a sordid audio photo, but one that isn’t too far off the beaten path. Nonturn (aka Nozom Yoneda) captures visceral slabs of found-sounds and organizes them in a way that is rhythmic, clinical, and oftentimes pleasantly chaotic. Dipping slightly into microscopic drone spheres for Territory, Nonturn evades genre pigeonholes. Tracks like “Evidence” capture the outside world, its disjointed bits and bobbles, samples them into a stream of subconscious, and eventually allows itself to flourish into the unknown. Sure, some may discover experimental clicks and cuts along the way (ie. “Appreciate” and “Platform”), but it is the synchronicity between organic and mechanical elements that galvanizes Territory and its longterm effects. The atonal musical arrangements, shifting sonic organisms, and dense minimalism from start to end, is a 49-minute discovery that continues to unravel with each listen. As these nine miniatures each hover at the 5-minute mark, Nonturn paints an aural canvass made from processed field-recordings and scattered noises yet somehow manages to temper the turbulence with control and clarity.

Territory is available on Audiobulb.
