Ndorfik :: Ojala EP (Local Gods)

Ojala captures the spirit of early IDM—where emotion meets experimentation. Emerging from FM synthesis and inspired by Karelia’s landscapes, the track blends atmospheric depth with playful rhythm. First appearing on Binary Echo (People Can Listen, April 2025), this EP features the original, a gentle ballad, and three distinct reworks, each paying homage to the genre’s formative years.

Ojala took shape in early spring, sparked by a focused exploration of FM synthesis—where evolving parameters intertwined to form vivid, unpredictable soundscapes. Its pulse carries winds from Lake Ladoga, hints of pine, and the gentle contours of Karelia’s terrain. Playful yet introspective, the piece glides with a rhythm reminiscent of Autechre‘s Chiastic Slide, echoing a time when IDM blurred boundaries with curiosity and code.

Named after a small village bearing a Finnish name, Ojala evokes the lyrical charm and quiet endurance of northern place-names. Dmitri Kiselev (Deekey), Nick Zavriev (Ambidextrous), Alexander Kononov (madebyitself), and Anthony Binding (MODUL) each offer a distinct lens: three reinterpretations steeped in IDM tradition, one delicate ballad, and the source track itself.

Originally part of Binary Echo (People Can Listen, April 2025), this release brings “Ojala” into full focus—a track once described as channeling the spirits of Herrmann & Kleine, Proem, Brothomstates, Novel 23, and Phonem. The remixes offer nuance and restraint: Deekey delivers crisp, fractured rhythms; Ambidextrous leans into its emotive core with quiet depth; madebyitself infuses break-driven grit with downtempo hues (our favorite of the lot); while MODUL closes with a detailed, Roel Funcken-esque precision—sound design shimmering at the edges, reaching deep into the genre’s formative years.

A resonant offering for longtime IDM devotees and newcomers alike.
