Mantle of Gets :: Caveat Emptor EP (Schematic Music Co.)

Some may recognize Luke Williams’ contributions as Quinoline Yellow with Skam and Touchin’ Bass, and now his Mantle of Gets moniker continues to rummage through dislocated electronic bits and pieces as he opens an account with Schematic for the Caveat Emptor EP (cassette/digital).

Filling 30 minutes in six unique pieces of utterly blissful disarray and articulated sound structures, this is a welcomed intro to 2021.

Seemingly an extension of Sba Per, Puffing like an Adder, and Vanity Board (Uchelfa, 2020), Williams admits that his beat oriented material (Caveat Emptor) was meant to come out before the generative ambient LP 3-pack on his own imprint. Nonetheless, what we find in this maze of shuffling beatwork is a creative sonic collection merging fractured rhythmic patterns with downtempo electro musings. For example, it all comes together on “BEG Exercise (Joaat.4d904073),” a groovy and sandblasted slice in itself as the closing “1Ftb, 1Fm” breaks open with brisk and bouncy beats, chugging melodic strands, and dithered echoes that can’t be ignored. On tracks like “Double F v Double D,” Mantle of Gets delivers an idiomatic soundscape that slips and slides around looping rhythms and yet maintains its composure as “HL But Can’t Use HL” glides into Autechrean soil with low-pressure ambient blips’n bleeps flickering about and comes to life. Familiar terrain is tread on “Madarch” where dilapidated beats collide with darkened dronescapes to create a surreal horizon as “Handsel (lap)” dips into glitchy abstractions of dust and debris.

We are eager and “keeping our ears peeled” for the double-vinyl full length announced for the 2nd quarter of 2021 and one can only imagine the strange worlds Mantle of Gets will inhabit when it’s released.
