(May 2010) House is quite a male-centric world. From its early beginnings with Jamie Principle to the likes of Moodymann and Theo Parrish house has been pretty much a patriarchal sound. But, there are some who are breaking the status quo; Jenifa Mayanja and Bu Mako Recordings. Mayanja has sent some positive ripples through the house hierarchy, has her recent EP, ‘Music 4 Adults’ continued down this line?
The three tracker opens with the deep movements of “Eye of the Storm.” Moving down the line of throaty female voacals, Mayanja presses bass and beat into warm lulling deep house. The track ushers in memories of Theo Parrish’s “Love Triumph”, though builds faster whilst maintaining a downtempo mood. The pace rises and builds for “Unveiling You” as a subdued disco lilt enters with brass and beats blending into a club friendly fanfare. “At Your Descretion” brings Music 4 Adults to its climax. The bpm is lowered and much more laid back loungue feel enters Mayanja’s notes. The track has a sleepy melancholy cloaked in its snares and bass and isolate keys.
Jenifa Mayanja has built on her foundation of organic and wholesome tones. The EP illustrates the diversity of what Mayanja is achieving on Bu Mako, wandering through the side streets and avenues of deep house and adding her own notes to the sound.
Music 4 Adults is out now on Bu Mako.
