Ever present microtonal and granular sampling combined with lo-fi glitches traverse through artificial glaciers in these often cold surroundings.
A varying display of electronic accumulation
Japanese musician/sound designer/coder/producer Toshiaki Ooi aka JEMAPUR steps forward with their latest release “Mode Cleaner” available through Netherlands based music label and multidisciplinary platform Omen Wapta.
Over the course of 9-tracks, JEMAPUR showcases a brilliance in a varying display of electronic accumulation from tracks created between 2016-2020. Ever present microtonal and granular sampling combined with lo-fi glitches traverse through artificial glaciers in these often cold surroundings. JEMAPUR is clearly warm-blooded though, as each movement contains emotive carrying points seeking to make lasting impressions.
Those familiar with previous releases, such as self-released UNKNOWN MEDIA from the start of the year, will be reminded of a profound melodic undertone in personal favorites “WSIF.rg,” “1011 ISOL-T,” and “M.PLEX.”
Having discovered JEMAPUR through a Miyu Hosoi installation in Tokyo called “Lenna”, where they reworked a 22.2ch mix into a stereo version—I have been eagerly keeping my eye on them and can say this will be an artist you will be hearing a lot more about over time to come— especially if this years releases are anything to go by.
