In spite of the electro coolness running through the record there is also an inviting techno undertone. Lombardozzi finds an enviable equilibrium between fluid waterways and firmer ground, an island of texture and turbulence.
Barba Records is a pretty curious imprint, as is its parent label Burek. Coming out of Croatia, perhaps not the most likely of lands for electronic music, Barba has explored a spread for sounds and styles. Clean and clever machine funk, full bodied techno and acid bred house is a short synopsis of what’s been on offer. Fresh from the pressing plant is a familiar figure. Heinrich Dressel, aka Valerio Lombardozzi, appeared a couple of years back with Lurking Underwater and the Minimal Rome man is returning with The Styx Swamp.
The aquatic undertones of Lurking Underwater are present from the outset. The title track toes the line between electro and techno, as does the entire EP. Notes ebb and flow, synthlines bending and curving around misted rhythm patterns. Perseus Traxx offers his own take. The melody of the original is maintained, as is the hazy atmosphere that surrounds the track. The UK artists bolsters beats, giving an extra bit of kick, whilst allowing that marine motif to bubble and simmer below.
“Sailing The Nether Waterways” balances light and dark elements, a cruel drum pattern and stabbing bass tempered by a meandering melody. “Gray Slope” follows a similar stream. A metallic edge glints as colder currents flow, yet a warm depth remains in the shadowy grooves that shimmer below the surface.
Last time I wrote about Heinrich Dressel I started reflecting on his musical path, the route the Italian artist has taken through his electronic career. I’m back at this point once again with The Styx Swamp. In spite of the electro coolness running through the record there is also an inviting techno undertone. Lombardozzi finds an enviable equilibrium between fluid waterways and firmer ground, an island of texture and turbulence.
