Fisk Industries is one person, Mat Ranson, based in London and The Isle Of Wight is his first official release. It’s an EP with 6 tracks released by the small and interesting label Highpoint Lowlife (UK). The sound? Yes, of course there are similarities with Boards Of Canada, ISAN, Bola and others who make trippy music with idyllic simplicity, yet Fisk Industries seems to capture all of the above while uniquely creating a signature electronic sound of his own.
There are some raw and noisy, but still very listenable moments in Fisk Industries’ music; Seemingly intentional, they create an esoteric quality and uniqueness to the overall feel of The Isle Of Wight. This debut EP also very rhythm-based, another resemblance with BoC’s rhythmic soundscapes. The melodies are not developed as much, which oftentimes leaves the listener grasping for a little more.
The Isle Of Wight is a successful, flowing EP with tantalizing appeal. It’ll be interesting to follow Fisk Industries’ progression should they continue with a follow-up album. (Look out for a Highpoint Lowlife Fall 2003 tour coming soon)
The Isle Of Wight EP is OUT NOW on Highpoint Lowlife.
