If someone asked me what genre this records belongs to, I would be in serious trouble. Surftronics? Loungecore? Mash-hop? It’s even more. It’s a sick remix album for a sick generation. End himself presents three brand new tunes, more surf, funky and prog-oriented than The Sounds Of Disaster, the title track is especially wicked and absolutely rocking.
The Foetus remix of “The Sick Generation” is simply stunning, adding some more influences and variations to the original, while Drop The Lime chooses a grimey breakcore hybrid, bouncy and massive. Jason Forrest adds some hip-hop breakage, a nice work but less effective than others, if you compare it to what Mad/EQ did to “Fit To Die” you’ll agree with me. The Adnoiseam newcomer brings a killer hip-hop tune, deep and aggressive, MC Equivalent knows his shit, i don’t know if it’s Mad/EQ himself or not. Honorable mention for Duran Duran Duran and his gabberoid assault, Hecq did a nice rework with his peculiar cool IDM sounding and Society Cleaners show even too much styles in only four minutes, i can’t figure exactly which are the features of his music, I’ll have to wait some more releases. Finally there are the bizarre sample-infested remixes made by Ning Nong, The Bran Flakes and Messer Chups (three relicks!), which are much in the spirit of End’s original material and use much of the instrumental parts, adding some more influences from weird underground movies by the likes of Meyer or Wood. At the end of this exciting journey into freaky sounds there’s a live version of “Ruin Everything,” one of the highlights of The Sounds Of Disaster, that features an injection of the very best electro theme from a TV series –you know, the one with Hasselhoff dressed in leather driving that black sports car.
The Sick Generation is out now on Hymen.
