Datach’i :: Bones (Timesig / Planet Mu)

Once again, Datach’i returns in his new highly musical phase of modular exploration with an album that sounds like yet another escalation from his previous System (Timesig, 2016). The newly reinvigorated melodic sound is amazing when paired with the production talents of Mr. Fraioli and the incredible quality of a well-configured modular set-up.

Once again, Datach’i returns in his new highly musical phase of modular exploration with an album that sounds like yet another escalation from his previous System (Timesig, 2016). In some ways I miss the experimental outings of older releases (from Planet Mu, Sublight, and earlier Caipirinha days) but the newly reinvigorated melodic sound is amazing when paired with the production talents of Mr. Fraioli and the incredible quality of a well-configured modular set-up. There are tones on Bones of the frenetic, almost Aphexian kind—beats of the past with a focus on creating highly textured lush pads and harmonies with many subtle layers. Much of Bones echoes the nostalgic sort of childhood summer vibes typically occupied by Christ. or Boards of Canada—something you can never really get enough of. Another thing that stands out is the varied nature of each track that maintains a consistent vibe and mood while morphing through a lot of stylistic changes from song to song. Where a lot of the older Datach’i was more uniform, Bones resolves itself into a well curated collection of tracks from all parts of his eclectic soundscape. Another great album, and I hope he continues in this vein although I do miss some of the chaos from the old days. Bones album aligns very well with System and you could listen to them back to back for days on end without wear.

Bones is available on Timesig / Planet Mu.
